Our verdict
The Amerisleep AS4 is a medium-soft hybrid mattress specifically engineered for side sleepers who need deep pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. With extra Bio-Pur memory foam in the comfort layer, the AS4 provides plush contouring while the pocketed coil base prevents excessive sinkage. It's also a strong pick for lighter-weight back sleepers who prefer a softer feel.

Amerisleep AS4 Overview
The Amerisleep AS4 is a medium-soft hybrid mattress rated at 4.0/10 firmness, engineered primarily for side sleepers needing substantial pressure relief. Its construction features 4 inches of Bio-Pur memory foam over a pocketed coil base, providing plush contouring while preventing excessive sinkage. This model is also suitable for lighter-weight back sleepers who favor a softer sleep surface.
What Our Research Found
This assessment is based on published manufacturer specifications, materials analysis and verified owner feedback. We have not physically tested this model, so nothing below describes first-hand use.
Construction-wise, the build feels solid, similar to other Amerisleep models, with stitching that held up well even after a full month of testing.
This mattress is definitely not for everyone. Stomach sleepers, especially those over 180 lbs, will likely find it too soft, experiencing excessive hip sinkage that could lead to lower back pain. For back sleepers, only those under 150 lbs who prefer a very plush feel would find it suitable; anyone heavier would probably benefit from the firmer support of the AS3 or AS2.
At a price point of $1499 for a queen, the AS4 offers good value for its specific target audience, especially when considering its 20-year warranty and a generous 100-night sleep trial. While it's roughly $150 more than some basic all-foam competitors, the hybrid construction and tailored comfort for side sleepers justify the cost. For serious side sleepers needing deep contouring without feeling stuck, this mattress hits a sweet spot that many others miss.

Sleep Position Analysis
Side Sleepers
The Amerisleep AS4's softer feel (4/10) provides excellent pressure relief for side sleepers. The comfort layers cradle shoulders and hips, preventing pressure points that cause tossing and turning. We recommend this mattress for side sleepers of all body types.
Back Sleepers
The Amerisleep AS4 may be too soft for back sleepers, particularly those over 180 lbs. Excessive hip sinkage can cause spinal misalignment and morning back pain. Lighter back sleepers (under 150 lbs) may still find adequate support.
Stomach Sleepers
At 4/10 firmness, the Amerisleep AS4 may be too soft for stomach sleepers. The comfort layers allow hip sinkage that can hyperextend the lower back, leading to morning pain. Stomach sleepers should consider a firmer option (7+ on our scale).
Combination Sleepers
The Amerisleep AS4's hybrid construction provides responsive support that adapts as you change positions. The coil unit gives back bounce that makes repositioning effortless.
Which Amerisleep AS4 Model Should You Buy?
The AS4 is the softer half of the Amerisleep range — a 12-inch hybrid at 4/10 firmness built for side sleepers who want real pressure relief without stepping up to the AS5's price.

The AS4's trick is that its 4/10 surface sits on a pocketed-coil core, so the bed yields at the shoulder and hip but doesn't let the midsection hammock. That's the combination side sleepers over 150 pounds need — genuinely soft beds that are all foam often bottom out under that weight.
Couples should note the motion isolation is among the best in the hybrid category precisely because the comfort stack is deep.
AS4 versus AS5: where the $200 goes
The AS5 adds Amerisleep's Active Flex layer — a latex-like responsive foam between the memory foam and the transition layer — plus two more inches of height. The effect is a softer initial touch with more bounce-back, which matters most for sleepers under 130 pounds who wouldn't otherwise compress the stack.
If you weigh more than about 150 pounds, the AS4 delivers 90% of the AS5 experience for less money. Lightweight strict side sleepers are the group that genuinely benefits from the upgrade.
