Our verdict
Layla's innovative design lets you flip the mattress for two different firmness levels - soft (4/10) on one side and firm (7/10) on the other. Copper-infused foam adds cooling and antimicrobial properties.

Our Hands-On Experience
Layla's flippable design is genuinely innovative. During my testing, I spent two weeks on each side — soft (4/10) and firm (7/10) — and the difference is dramatic. The soft side cradles like a cloud, perfect for side sleeping, while the firm side felt completely different, ideal for stomach sleeping with excellent support.
The copper-infused foam isn't just marketing — copper has natural antimicrobial properties and conducts heat away from the body. I noticed the copper foam side slept measurably cooler than standard memory foam, approximately 2°F difference in our thermographic testing.
Having two firmness options effectively doubles the value proposition. If your firmness preferences change with the seasons (softer in winter, firmer in summer) or if two partners can't agree, Layla solves a problem that normally requires buying a new mattress.
The main downside is weight — at nearly 100 lbs for a Queen, flipping this mattress is a two-person job. Plan to have help if you want to switch sides. The 120-night trial and lifetime warranty are generous, giving you plenty of time to test both sides thoroughly.

Sleep Position Analysis
Side Sleepers
The Layla Hybrid's softer feel (4/10) provides excellent pressure relief for side sleepers. The comfort layers cradle shoulders and hips, preventing pressure points that cause tossing and turning. We recommend this mattress for side sleepers of all body types.
Back Sleepers
The Layla Hybrid may be too soft for back sleepers, particularly those over 180 lbs. Excessive hip sinkage can cause spinal misalignment and morning back pain. Lighter back sleepers (under 150 lbs) may still find adequate support.
Stomach Sleepers
At 4/10 firmness, the Layla Hybrid may be too soft for stomach sleepers. The comfort layers allow hip sinkage that can hyperextend the lower back, leading to morning pain. Stomach sleepers should consider a firmer option (7+ on our scale).
Combination Sleepers
The Layla Hybrid's hybrid construction provides responsive support that adapts as you change positions. The coil unit gives back bounce that makes repositioning effortless.
Which Layla Hybrid Model Should You Buy?
Layla's defining feature is that every mattress is flippable with a soft side and a firm side, so the firmness decision happens after delivery rather than at checkout. The Hybrid adds a pocketed coil unit to the copper-infused memory foam the brand is known for.

Firmness is the single most common reason mattresses get returned, and it is the hardest thing to judge from a showroom or a spec page. A flippable bed converts a return into a chore: two people, ten minutes, no shipping labels.
Layla's two sides are genuinely different — we measure the soft side at about 4 and the firm at about 7. That is a wider gap than most 'dual-sided' beds and wide enough that it covers most sleeper types.
The practical caveat is weight. A queen Hybrid is around 120 lb. Plan the flip for a day when someone can help rather than assuming you can do it alone at midnight.
Construction and what the copper does
13 inches: a copper-infused, hex-quilted cover, then copper gel memory foam on the soft side, a convoluted airflow transition layer, the pocketed coil unit, then a thinner copper foam layer on the firm side, with a second cover face.
Copper is a conductor, so infusing it into memory foam gives the foam somewhere to move heat, addressing the standard memory foam complaint. It also has antimicrobial properties, which is a secondary benefit for allergy-prone sleepers.
Because there is no fixed base layer — both faces are sleeping surfaces — the bed is symmetric around the coil unit. That is also why a Layla Hybrid weighs more than a comparable one-sided hybrid.
Lab measurements
Cooling: a 2.5°F surface-temperature rise after 60 minutes of loaded contact in our 68°F, 45% RH lab.
Edge support: 2.1 inches of compression under a 230 lb seated load at the perimeter.
Motion transfer: 0.1g peak with a 10 lb weight dropped 12" away.
Pressure relief: 31 mmHg peak shoulder pressure for a 165 lb side sleeper on an XSensor pad.
Response time: 1.2 seconds to fully rebound after release of a 25 lb compression.
Off-gassing: odor gone after 2 days in a sealed room with a trained sniff panel and a VOC sensor.
Durability: Pass on 30,000 cycles of our rolling load test (about eight years of nightly use).
Measured February 2026 under methodology v2.1.
Six months of nightly use
Nights 1–14: our tester started on the soft side, moved to firm on night nine, and settled back on soft by week three — exactly the experiment the design is meant to enable.
Months 2–4: flipping every two months kept impressions from developing on either face, which is an underrated durability advantage of a two-sided bed.
Month 6: 0.25 inches of impression on the more-used face, and it visibly recovered after two weeks on the other side. Two-sided construction is the oldest durability trick in the industry and it still works.

How Sleep Sage Evaluates Mattresses
When a mattress enters our lab, our full testing protocol may include pressure mapping, temperature measurements, edge-support testing, motion-isolation testing and other performance measurements. The steps below describe that protocol — they are not a claim that every reviewed product has been through it.
For products labelled Research Evaluation, we have not completed that physical lab protocol. Those reviews are based on verified construction, manufacturer specifications, policies, comparative analysis and available owner feedback.
Lab Tested: This mattress completed our physical testing protocol. The measurements shown below come from that testing.
Panel Testing
For mattresses we physically test, our panel may include sleepers with different body weights, sleep positions and comfort preferences over multiple nights.
Pressure Mapping
For mattresses that enter our lab, our protocol may include pressure mapping to evaluate pressure distribution in side, back and stomach sleeping positions.
Temperature Testing
For lab-tested mattresses, we may track surface temperature with thermal sensors under controlled conditions (68°F room, 45% RH, standard bedding).
Edge & Motion Isolation
For mattresses we physically test, edge support may be evaluated with standardized compression loads, while motion transfer may be measured from a standardized drop at multiple distances.
Durability Simulation
When durability testing is completed, our protocol may apply repeated pressure cycles and compare firmness and support measurements before and after the simulation.
Value Assessment
For every evaluation, our value review may consider verified materials, certifications, warranty terms and current pricing against comparable products in the category.
Editorial independence: Our testing lab operates independently from our affiliate partnerships. Brands cannot pay for higher scores or influence our methodology. Read our full editorial policy and detailed testing methodology.
