Our Verdict
The Haugesund is IKEA's answer for people who cannot sleep on foam. Pocket springs wrapped in a thin foam and fiber comfort layer give it airflow that neither the Morgedal nor the Matrand can match, and at 10 inches it is the tallest of the three budget models. It sleeps noticeably cooler and responds faster when you roll over. In exchange you lose motion isolation — springs transfer movement, and a restless partner will be felt. It is the pick for a hot sleeper, a combination sleeper, or anyone furnishing a guest room in a warm climate.
Ratings Breakdown
How we score (1–10 rubric) →Lab measurements: in the queue
The IKEA Haugesund Spring Mattress has been slept on and scored by our testers, but it has not yet gone through the full instrumented protocol — pressure mapping, thermal imaging, motion transfer and edge-deflection loading. Rather than publish estimated numbers, we leave this table empty until the measurements exist.
Firmness Level
Medium (6/10)
What We Love
- Pocket springs move air — clearly the coolest of IKEA's budget trio
- 10 inches tall, so standard fitted sheets sit correctly
- Responsive surface makes repositioning easy for combination sleepers
- Same 365-day return window and 10-year limited warranty
- Individually wrapped coils, not a connected innerspring unit
What Could Be Better
- Motion transfer is the worst of the three IKEA models
- Thin comfort layer means limited pressure relief for strict side sleepers
- Perimeter coils are not reinforced — edge sag under sitting
- Heavy and awkward to move up stairs compared with a boxed foam bed
Best For
- Hot sleepers
- Combination sleepers
- Back sleepers
- Guest rooms in warm climates
- Anyone who dislikes the sinking foam feel
Not Ideal For
- Light sleepers with a restless partner
- Strict side sleepers needing deep contour
- Sleepers who want a hug

Sleep Position Analysis
Side Sleepers
At 6/10 firmness, the IKEA Haugesund Spring Mattress works well for average-weight side sleepers (130-230 lbs). Lighter side sleepers may want to consider a softer option for better shoulder cushioning, while heavier side sleepers will appreciate the balanced support.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers will find the IKEA Haugesund Spring Mattress's 6/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature. Our back-sleeping testers rated this 7.8/10 for support.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers need a firmer surface to prevent hip sinkage and lower back strain. At 6/10, the IKEA Haugesund Spring Mattress provides the flat, supportive surface stomach sleepers need. Our testers confirmed minimal hip depression during prone sleeping.
Combination Sleepers
The IKEA Haugesund Spring Mattress's pocket spring construction contours to each sleep position but may resist quick position changes. Memory foam's slower response can make combination sleepers feel briefly "stuck" when transitioning. If you change positions frequently, consider a hybrid alternative.
Which IKEA Haugesund Spring Mattress Model Should You Buy?
The Haugesund is IKEA's pocket-spring mattress and the coolest-sleeping bed in the mainstream range. Springs put it in a different feel category from the Morgedal and Matrand: bouncier, easier to move on, and less isolating for couples.

Read the full IKEA Haugesund Spring Mattress vs. Zinus Green Tea comparison →Why the coils matter at this price
Pocket springs move air. That is the single biggest reason the Haugesund is the coolest bed IKEA sells — heat leaves through the coil layer instead of being held in foam. If your complaint about your last mattress was waking up hot, this is the one in the range to try first.
Bounce is the other consequence. Getting in and out of bed and changing position are noticeably easier than on the Morgedal, which matters more than people expect for older sleepers and anyone with mobility limitations.
Where it falls short
The comfort layer over the coils is thin. Side sleepers feel the coil unit through it sooner than they would on a proper hybrid with two or three inches of foam. If you sleep strictly on your side, the Matrand or a topper over the Haugesund is the better plan.
Motion transfer is real. These are pocket coils, so it's better than a Bonnell unit like the Hamarvik, but a restless partner is more noticeable than on either foam bed.
Setup and longevity
It ships rolled and expands within about 72 hours with minimal smell — springs and thin foam off-gas far less than memory foam. It needs a supportive slatted or solid base; on a sagging old box spring, the coil unit will follow the dip.
Coil units tend to outlive budget foam. Expect five to seven years before the comfort layer flattens, which is longer than either the Morgedal or Matrand.

Finally a cheap bed that isn't a hot plate
Phoenix summer. Came off a memory foam bed that was unusable in July. This one breathes. Not luxurious but I sleep through the night.
Feel every movement
Springs do what springs do. If your partner gets up twice a night you will know about it. Otherwise solid for the money.
Good in the guest room
Bought it because guests kept saying our old foam guest bed was too soft. Zero complaints since.

How We Tested the IKEA Haugesund Spring Mattress
Every mattress we review goes through our rigorous, multi-step evaluation process. Here's exactly how we arrived at our scores for the IKEA IKEA Haugesund Spring Mattress.
Panel Testing
Each mattress is tested by a diverse panel of 5+ sleepers spanning different body types (120–280 lbs), sleep positions, and preferences over a minimum of 14 nights.
Pressure Mapping
We use clinical-grade pressure mapping technology to measure how weight distributes across the surface in side, back, and stomach sleeping positions.
Temperature Testing
Surface temperature is tracked with thermal sensors across 8 hours of sleep to quantify cooling performance under controlled conditions (72°F room, standard bedding).
Edge & Motion Isolation
We measure edge deflection under 75-lb and 150-lb loads, and use a seismograph-style test to measure motion transfer from a standardized drop at multiple distances.
Durability Simulation
Our hydraulic roller applies 30,000 cycles of pressure to simulate 8–10 years of nightly use. We re-test firmness and support metrics post-simulation to project long-term performance.
Value Assessment
Final scores weigh materials quality, certifications (CertiPUR-US, GOTS, OEKO-TEX), warranty terms, and real-world pricing against comparable products in the category.
Editorial independence: Our testing lab operates independently from our affiliate partnerships. Brands cannot pay for higher scores or influence our methodology. Read our full editorial policy and detailed testing methodology.
