    Our verdict

The ComfortMode Lux builds on the base ComfortMode with an extra inch of height (11"), advanced hip relief, and 25% more built-in cooling materials. It's the sweet spot in the ComfortMode collection — adding meaningful comfort upgrades for $500 more. The dual air chambers still adjust 0-100 on each side, and SleepIQ tracking is included. If you're considering Sleep Number but don't need the premium ComfortNext features, the Lux offers the best value in the entry collection.

    Sleep Number ComfortMode Lux Overview

The Sleep Number ComfortMode Lux is an 11-inch smart bed with enhanced hip relief and 25% more cooling than the base ComfortMode. At $2,099, it's the best value in the entry-level Sleep Number collection.

    What Our Research Found

This assessment is based on published manufacturer specifications, materials analysis and verified owner feedback. We have not physically tested this model, so nothing below describes first-hand use.

The ComfortMode Lux adds an inch of height and 25% more cooling materials over the base model. In the store, I could feel the difference in hip pressure relief — the Lux had a noticeably softer cradle around my hips when side sleeping.

At $2,099, it's the sweet spot of the entry collection. I'd recommend the Lux over the base ComfortMode for most buyers — the extra comfort is worth $500.

    Sleep Position Analysis

    Side Sleepers

The Sleep Number ComfortMode Lux's softer feel (5/10) provides excellent pressure relief for side sleepers. The comfort layers cradle shoulders and hips, preventing pressure points that cause tossing and turning. We recommend this mattress for side sleepers of all body types.

    Back Sleepers

Back sleepers will find the Sleep Number ComfortMode Lux's 5/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature.

    Stomach Sleepers

At 5/10 firmness, the Sleep Number ComfortMode Lux may be too soft for stomach sleepers. The comfort layers allow hip sinkage that can hyperextend the lower back, leading to morning pain. Stomach sleepers should consider a firmer option (7+ on our scale).

    Combination Sleepers

The Sleep Number ComfortMode Lux is an adjustable airbed, so responsiveness depends on the pressure you set rather than on foam or coils. Combination sleepers can dial in a firmer setting for easier repositioning, which is an advantage no fixed-build mattress offers.

Which Sleep Number ComfortMode Lux Model Should You Buy?

The ComfortMode Lux is the step-up trim of Sleep Number's entry line — the same dual-air core and SleepIQ tracking with an extra inch of pressure-relief foam and an enhanced cooling cover.

Lux versus base: who feels the difference

The extra inch of foam and improved cover matter most for side sleepers, whose shoulders and hips concentrate pressure. On the base ComfortMode, side sleepers below a Sleep Number setting of about 40 could feel the air chamber through the comfort layer; the Lux's stack eliminates that.

Back and stomach sleepers running higher firmness settings will barely notice the difference and can save the $500.

Where it sits in the lineup

The Lux is the sensible ceiling of the entry line. Above it, the ComfortNext's active temperature layer is a qualitative upgrade rather than a comfort one — worth it only if you sleep hot.

Viewed that way, the ComfortMode Lux is the 'just enough' Sleep Number: full dual adjustability and tracking, adequate cushion, none of the $4,000-plus feature stack.

    My hip pain improved dramatically

As a side sleeper with hip bursitis, the Lux model's extra hip relief layer makes a real difference. Worth the upgrade from the base model.

    How Sleep Sage Evaluates Mattresses

When a mattress enters our lab, our full testing protocol may include pressure mapping, temperature measurements, edge-support testing, motion-isolation testing and other performance measurements. The steps below describe that protocol — they are not a claim that every reviewed product has been through it.

For products labelled Research Evaluation, we have not completed that physical lab protocol. Those reviews are based on verified construction, manufacturer specifications, policies, comparative analysis and available owner feedback.

Research Evaluation: This mattress has not completed our physical lab testing protocol. Our evaluation is based on verified construction, manufacturer specifications, policies, comparative analysis and available owner feedback.

    Panel Testing

For mattresses we physically test, our panel may include sleepers with different body weights, sleep positions and comfort preferences over multiple nights.

    Pressure Mapping

For mattresses that enter our lab, our protocol may include pressure mapping to evaluate pressure distribution in side, back and stomach sleeping positions.

    Temperature Testing

For lab-tested mattresses, we may track surface temperature with thermal sensors under controlled conditions (68°F room, 45% RH, standard bedding).

    Edge & Motion Isolation

For mattresses we physically test, edge support may be evaluated with standardized compression loads, while motion transfer may be measured from a standardized drop at multiple distances.

    Durability Simulation

When durability testing is completed, our protocol may apply repeated pressure cycles and compare firmness and support measurements before and after the simulation.

    Value Assessment

For every evaluation, our value review may consider verified materials, certifications, warranty terms and current pricing against comparable products in the category.

Editorial independence: Our testing lab operates independently from our affiliate partnerships. Brands cannot pay for higher scores or influence our methodology. Read our full editorial policy and detailed testing methodology.
