Our verdict
Purple's innovative GelFlex Grid technology offers a truly unique sleep experience. The grid flexes under pressure points while remaining firm under areas that need support. It's the most cooling mattress we've tested.
Purple Hybrid Premier Overview
The Purple Hybrid Premier features the proprietary GelFlex Grid for unmatched cooling and pressure relief. Our thermal testing confirmed it as the coolest-sleeping mattress available, ideal for hot sleepers and those seeking a unique no-pressure-point sleep experience.
Video Review
Our Hands-On Experience
Purple's GelFlex Grid technology genuinely feels unlike anything else on the market. The first time I lay on the Purple Hybrid Premier, I spent 10 minutes just pressing the grid with my hand, watching it instantly snap back. It's a hyper-elastic polymer that flexes under pressure points while staying firm where you need support — and the feeling is immediately distinctive.
Temperature regulation is where Purple truly dominates. The grid structure creates a natural air channel system with over 1,400 open air channels. In our thermal testing, the Purple Hybrid Premier stayed 5-7°F cooler than traditional memory foam mattresses. It's the only mattress where I never once flipped the pillow to the cool side — because the mattress itself stays cool.
The unique feel does require an adjustment period. I'd estimate it took me about 10 days to fully acclimate. The sensation is 'floating' rather than 'sinking' or 'bouncing.' Some people love this immediately; others need time. I went from skeptical to converted, but I'd strongly recommend trying this in a Purple showroom if possible before committing.
At $1,999, it's a significant investment, and the 100-night trial and 10-year warranty are shorter than many competitors. My advice: if you run hot and dislike the 'stuck in quicksand' feeling of memory foam, the Purple is worth every dollar. If you prefer traditional mattress feels, look elsewhere.

Sleep Position Analysis
Side Sleepers
The Purple Hybrid Premier's softer feel (5/10) provides excellent pressure relief for side sleepers. The comfort layers cradle shoulders and hips, preventing pressure points that cause tossing and turning. We recommend this mattress for side sleepers of all body types.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers will find the Purple Hybrid Premier's 5/10 firmness ideal for maintaining proper spinal alignment. The support system keeps hips from sinking too deep while allowing natural lumbar curvature.
Stomach Sleepers
At 5/10 firmness, the Purple Hybrid Premier may be too soft for stomach sleepers. The comfort layers allow hip sinkage that can hyperextend the lower back, leading to morning pain. Stomach sleepers should consider a firmer option (7+ on our scale).
Combination Sleepers
The Purple Hybrid Premier's hybrid construction provides responsive support that adapts as you change positions. The coil unit gives back bounce that makes repositioning effortless.
Which Purple Hybrid Premier Model Should You Buy?
Purple's differentiator is the hyper-elastic polymer grid. The Premier is the flagship tier and the only one where you choose grid depth — three or four inches — which changes the bed far more than a firmness label would suggest.
| Model | Firmness | Best for | Queen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purple Essential | 6.5/10 | Entry buyersTwo inches of grid over foam. The cheapest way into the feel. | $999 |
| Purple Restore Hybrid | 6/10 | Most sleepersGrid over coils with a plusher top. | $1,699 |
| Purple Hybrid Premier 3 | 5/10 | Side and combination sleepersOur pick in the Premier line. Three inches of grid over responsive coils. | $1,999 |
| Purple Hybrid Premier 4 | 4.5/10 | Heavier side sleepers and pressure-point reliefFour inches of grid. Deeper cradle, noticeably heavier bed. | $2,499 |

Choose the WinkBed if: You want a lifetime warranty and the best edge support we measure.
Read the full Purple Hybrid Premier vs. WinkBed comparison →How the grid behaves
The grid is a gel-polymer lattice that buckles under concentrated pressure and stays rigid everywhere else. Practically, your shoulder and hip sink through it while your waist is still supported — the mechanism no foam replicates.
It also does not trap heat, because the lattice is mostly air. Our thermal run recorded a 2.5°F rise after 60 minutes of loaded contact, among the lowest figures in our entire database including every phase-change cover we have tested.
The tradeoff is feel. The grid is polarizing: some testers describe it as floating, others as lying on a stack of soft rubber bands. There is no way to know which camp you are in without lying on one, and Purple has enough retail presence that you should before spending $2,000.
Lab measurements
Cooling: a 2.5°F surface-temperature rise after 60 minutes of loaded contact in our 68°F, 45% RH lab.
Edge support: 2 inches of compression under a 230 lb seated load at the perimeter.
Motion transfer: 0.09g peak with a 10 lb weight dropped 12" away.
Pressure relief: 29 mmHg peak shoulder pressure for a 165 lb side sleeper on an XSensor pad.
Response time: 0.6 seconds to fully rebound after release of a 25 lb compression.
Off-gassing: odor gone after 2 days in a sealed room with a trained sniff panel and a VOC sensor.
Durability: Pass on 30,000 cycles of our rolling load test (about eight years of nightly use).
Measured October 2025 under methodology v2.0.
Re-scored January 2026 under methodology v2.1, when the 30,000-cycle durability simulation was run.
Practical warnings
Weight: a Premier 4 queen is roughly 140 lb. Plan on two people for setup and do not expect to move it alone.
Foundation: the grid needs a solid or closely-slatted base. Slat gaps over three inches will telegraph through and can void the warranty.
Sheets: standard fitted sheets fight the 13-inch profile on the Premier 4. Buy deep-pocket sheets at the same time.
At six months we measured no meaningful impression — the polymer grid does not take a set the way foam does, which is the strongest durability argument for the platform.

Finally sleeping cool!
I've tried every 'cooling' mattress out there and this is the only one that actually works. I used to wake up in a pool of sweat, now I sleep perfectly comfortable all night.
The unique feel grew on me
Took about a week to adjust to the Grid feeling. Now I can't imagine sleeping on anything else. It's like nothing I've ever experienced.
Hot flashes? No problem
Going through menopause with night sweats was miserable until Purple. The cooling is genuinely life-changing. Worth every dollar of the premium price.

How Sleep Sage Evaluates Mattresses
When a mattress enters our lab, our full testing protocol may include pressure mapping, temperature measurements, edge-support testing, motion-isolation testing and other performance measurements. The steps below describe that protocol — they are not a claim that every reviewed product has been through it.
For products labelled Research Evaluation, we have not completed that physical lab protocol. Those reviews are based on verified construction, manufacturer specifications, policies, comparative analysis and available owner feedback.
Lab Tested: This mattress completed our physical testing protocol. The measurements shown below come from that testing.
Panel Testing
For mattresses we physically test, our panel may include sleepers with different body weights, sleep positions and comfort preferences over multiple nights.
Pressure Mapping
For mattresses that enter our lab, our protocol may include pressure mapping to evaluate pressure distribution in side, back and stomach sleeping positions.
Temperature Testing
For lab-tested mattresses, we may track surface temperature with thermal sensors under controlled conditions (68°F room, 45% RH, standard bedding).
Edge & Motion Isolation
For mattresses we physically test, edge support may be evaluated with standardized compression loads, while motion transfer may be measured from a standardized drop at multiple distances.
Durability Simulation
When durability testing is completed, our protocol may apply repeated pressure cycles and compare firmness and support measurements before and after the simulation.
Value Assessment
For every evaluation, our value review may consider verified materials, certifications, warranty terms and current pricing against comparable products in the category.
Editorial independence: Our testing lab operates independently from our affiliate partnerships. Brands cannot pay for higher scores or influence our methodology. Read our full editorial policy and detailed testing methodology.
